Five-time GRAMMY-nominated vocalist and UNO alumna Karrin Allyson joins the award-winning UNO Jazz Ensemble for a special collaboration celebrating creativity, artistry, and the enduring connection between one of jazz's most acclaimed voices and her alma mater. The program will feature primarily Allyson's original compositions, specially orchestrated for the UNO Jazz Ensemble, offering a unique opportunity to hear her music reimagined for large jazz ensemble. Showcasing outstanding student musicians alongside a world-class artist, this performance highlights the synergy between Allyson and the ensemble while celebrating UNO's tradition of jazz excellence. Donations will be accepted in support of UNO Jazz Scholarships, helping provide opportunities for future generations of jazz students.
Who's playing
Allyson studied classical piano at UNO and sang around Omaha before building a career that took her through Minneapolis, Kansas City and New York. She has recorded nearly 15 projects, and the university later gave her an honorary doctorate. She plays with the UNO Jazz Ensemble, a student big band led by Pete Madsen.
What to expect
The students play big band arrangements written for Allyson's voice, including some by Darren Pettit. The set moves between her originals, jazz standards and Brazilian music. She is also expected to sit at the piano for a couple of songs, including a preview of her next project. The show is in the Strauss Concert Hall, a 422-seat room with two levels and a pipe organ.

A singer of this standing is coming back to her alma mater and working alongside student musicians. It is a rare chance to hear her songs in a big band setting. The ensemble then takes the same program to Kansas City the next night, so this is a home-city send-off for the students.
