In Search of the Signers
Saturday, August 1 at The Durham Museum, Omaha
About
Omaha’s first real estate agent, Byron Reed, assembled one of the nation’s most important collections of coinage and manuscripts. Reed also sought a signature from each signer, and today, the Byron Reed Collection includes documents related to 49 of the 56 signers. The Durham Museum is proud to preserve and feature it in honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States.
What to expect
Visitors can see original letters, receipts and other documents from the Byron Reed Collection tied to signers of the Declaration of Independence, along with a reproduction of John Trumbull’s “Declaration of Independence.” The exhibition frames Reed not just as a collector, but as an Omaha figure whose manuscript and coinage holdings became a significant historical resource.
Why go
“In Search of the Signers” offers a close look at the people behind the Declaration through the traces they left on paper. At The Durham Museum, the exhibition connects America’s founding era with Omaha’s own collecting history, showing how Reed’s search for the signers helped preserve documents related to nearly all of them.
