Who's playing
Jazz Ensemble II is directed by Prof. Jason Johnson. It focuses on classic big band literature, including Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman and Stan Kenton. The group plays at UNO's Great Plains Jazz Festival and appears regularly at Omaha Jitterbugs swing dances. Jazz Ensemble III is another student band in the School of Music's jazz program.
What to expect
Expect a full big band set with horns, rhythm section and charts from the swing-era canon. The concert is held in the Strauss Concert Hall, a 422-seat room on two levels with a Casavant organ. It is a campus concert, so the crowd mixes students, families, faculty and neighbors. A livestream is also offered for anyone who can't attend in person.
Why go
Student ensembles like these are where Omaha's next jazz players get their start, and the music is the real big band repertoire. The pay-what-you-wish ticket makes it an easy, low-risk evening of live music.
