Who's playing
The Youth Symphony is the advanced orchestra of the Omaha Area Youth Orchestras, a nonprofit that grew out of a youth symphony begun in the 1950s. It is led by conductor Matthew J. Brooks. The students rehearse as a full orchestra and take on the kind of repertoire a professional symphony plays. Each year the group also performs side by side with the Omaha Symphony.
What to expect
A full youth orchestra concert in the Strauss concert hall, a 422-seat room built for acoustic music. The hall is also home to a Casavant organ. Audiences are mostly families, friends and music teachers. The hall is small enough that you can see the players' faces from most seats.
Why go
Hearing a youth orchestra at this level is a good look at the next generation of Omaha musicians. OAYO draws students from across the Omaha and Council Bluffs area. The pay-what-you-can ticket model keeps the concert open to anyone curious about classical music, and it makes a low-pressure outing for a family.
